I bring a rigorous analytical foundation to this work, including a doctorate in environmental public health and professional experience advising nonprofits and government agencies. In those roles, I supported decision-making through careful evaluation of evidence, thoughtful interpretation of uncertainty, and clear communication—skills that translate directly to high-quality genealogical research.
Genealogy rarely offers simple answers. Records are incomplete, identities overlap, and evidence must be weighed with care. I approach each project with a commitment to accuracy, transparency, and intellectual honesty, ensuring that clients understand not only the findings, but the strength of the evidence behind them.
I also enjoy working with those who want to learn. With experience teaching at both the secondary and collegiate levels, I offer coaching that makes genealogical research more accessible, whether you’re just beginning or looking to deepen your skills.
I’m Liesel Seryak, founder of More Than a Name Genealogy.
I specialize in helping people uncover, interpret, and thoughtfully understand their family’s history. Grounded in careful research and clear, evidence-based conclusions, I go beyond names and dates to reveal the context, connections, and stories that give those details meaning.
My work in genealogy spans more than 20 years, culminating in the launch of my business in 2026. Over time, what began as a personal pursuit evolved into a professional practice dedicated to guiding others through the complexities of their own family stories.

More About Me
I'm a born-and-raised Central Ohioan, and a graduate of University of Dayton and The Ohio State University. I'm a mom of two teens who keep me busy and generally tolerate my genealogy enthusiasm. In my free time I enjoy researching my own family's history (yes, more genealogy!), crafty pursuits like sewing, hiking and visiting national parks, and reading - especially historical fiction and mysteries/detective series.
If you’re interested in learning more about your family history, or in developing your own research skills, I’d be glad to work with you. Contact me to set up a free 20-minute virtual consultation to get started.
